Completely Unfinished
A TRAVERSAL OF THE NON FINITO
Completely Unfinished was a museum exhibition created to challenge the negatively charged preconception that incomplete works are of lesser value compared to finished works. Unfinished works could be considered more engaging to viewers, however, as the raw thoughts and emotions of an artist’s process can create a more intimate experience for an audience. This can be evidenced through factors like the Zeigarnik effect, where individuals are more attentive to incomplete tasks than ones that are finished or complete.
In the context of a museum exhibition, an intellectual, abstract approach was taken to direct the experience toward a work in progress or an unfinished task and tie it together conceptually. A CMYK palette was used to reflect the concept of process, or parts coming together as a whole. Sans-serif typography was selected to reflect the underlying tone that not everything has to be decorative in order to be beautiful.
Posters, packaging, a brochure, and environmental designs were created to visualize the end-to-end user experience. Design elements from the poster, exhibition wall, and packaging were interchanged to maintain consistency with the rest of the program’s identity, whereas the content-rich brochure introduced additional elements to further develop the brand of the exhibition.
